Alfa Romeo Montreal
I showed this one for the first time at the ‘24 San Marino Motor Classic.
When I started this piece, my thought was to create an homage to Roy Lichtenstien. But as it progressed, I realized that the half-tone patterns that he liked to use wouldn’t work here; I would need subtle, continuous-tone gradations to describe the subject’s forms. I retained the primary colors as a base, but the result was a more serious mood, rather than the signature Lichtenstien comic book feel.
The image’s aspect ratio (6.14 x 2.61) is the same as that of a US dollar bill. But the intent wasn’t to equate the car with money. Rather, it was to make the piece relatable to the viewer by choosing a format that was very familia… and (coincidentally) the shape of US currency works well with the long, low form of a car.
As mentioned in a previous post, wide aspect ratio images aren’t great for social media platforms, which tend to be formatted for square images. Further, when seen online, pieces like this are less impactful because their physical scale is lost. (This piece is about 42” wide.) Hopefully this art will be displayed in physical form again soon!
